Skipper: José Azqueta

José Azqueta’s sailing journey traces back to his participation in the esteemed José Luis de Ugarte Sailing School in Biscay in 1991. Starting in the Snipe class and later transitioning to Laser, where he spent around six years, Azqueta eventually ventured into the Cruiser class until acquiring his first J80 in 2012. Since then, he has emerged as one of Spain’s top skippers in this class.

Azqueta gained prominence in 2019, making waves at the Getxo World Championship in the J80 class. Sailing the ‘Biobizz’ with his crew, he consistently ranked among the world’s best, securing a commendable and surprising fifth place. Prior to this, he had also clinched third place in the Spanish Championship.

With a sailing journey rooted in the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club, Azqueta’s illustrious career reached its peak with a second-place finish in the 2021 World Championship in Denmark (Rungsted), narrowly missing out on victory. He followed this with a sixth-place finish in Newport (United States) in 2022, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the J80 class. Azqueta has been navigating the J80 class for over twelve years, witnessing a significant increase in participation and the formation of a robust racing calendar within the fleet.
